Cripple Creek Crawl |
Wilderness enthusiast? Experienced hiker? In good physical shape? Seeker of amazing scenery missed by most? Have proper footwear? If you have just said ‘Yes!' five times this is a trek you cannot pass up! A rugged creek crawl through the nastiest of terrain, met with multiple obstacles and thick, seemingly impassible brush, revealing sights the average person will never partake of. A very rare opportunity to experience truly unspoiled wilderness.
Stay close to the creek as it is your guide. Slippery unstable stones, loose dead timber, and waterfall rock climbing may represent a favorable alternative to attempting the thick dense brush and fallen timber covering the steep walls of the ravine.
20 minutes into your trek are the magnificent Cripple Creek Falls, a view you are not likely to see anywhere else on the planet. About an hour into your hike you will discover the largest beaver dam reservoir you are likely to see. This can be a rest and turn-around point or the truly intrepid can attempt to circle the dam. |

| Rettan's Roundabout |
Old Pioneer logging roads take you on this looping tour into the vast regions of isolated wilderness surrounding Denbigh. Although the terrain allows easy hiking there are many large hills to add to the challenge.
With a relaxed stroll around the lakes, creeks, swamps, beaver ponds and magnificent rock formations you are bound to encounter many of the critters who call it home. Deer, elk, moose, rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks share the area with countless birds of all varieties, all happily awaiting the opportunity to pose for your photos.
At the midway point of your trek you will discover Rettan's Lake; a magnificent gem of a lake too breathtaking to just walk by. It's perfect opportunity to proceed to the picnic area to enjoy your lunch (provided by the Swiss Inn), and maybe wet a line for a speckled trout to give your lunch that ‘bit extra'.
The rest of the journey, equally breathtaking, will return you to your vehicle. |

Deep Woods Offer |
What??? I can hit the deep woods from downtown Denbigh? Yes you can! A short walk from the Swiss Inn into the Village brings you to the entrance of a hiking trail that leads to a lookout point with a magnificent view of the vast wilderness, endless hills, lakes and forests that surround our region.
The terrain is very rough, but is quite stable and for the most part the slope of this climb is quite mild, making this a challenging but very enjoyable trek for hikers of all levels.
The maple, oak, cedar, birch and poplar trees push back the pines in this area attracting a large variety of wildlife. Walk quietly and you just might see a deer or two as they make their way down from the peak for a drink in the creek below, among many other critters.
The lookout point represents the end of the trail as it dissipates into overgrown wilderness beyond. There is ample rock seating available to sit back and enjoy the tranquility of true wilderness before heading back to reality. |
